Yann Martel

Yann Martel is a Canadian writer known for his literary fiction. He gained fame for his novel Life of Pi, which won the Man Booker Prize and was made into a film. Born in Spain to Canadian parents who lived a nomadic lifestyle, Yann spent his childhood in various places including Alaska, British Columbia, Costa Rica, France, Ontario, and Mexico. As an adult, he has resided in Iran, Turkey, and India. After studying philosophy at Trent University and taking on various jobs such as tree planting, dishwashing, and security guarding, he began his writing career. He currently lives in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, with fellow writer Alice Kuipers and their four children. Yann Martel published his first work, a collection titled The Facts Behind Helsinki Roccamatios, in 1993, followed by his debut novel, Self, in 1996.
