Xiran Jay Zhao is a Chinese-Canadian author who debuted in 2021 with the release of Iron Widow, which quickly became a New York Times bestseller. The young adult novel was promoted as a blend of Pacific Rim and The Handmaid’s Tale. Born in China, Zhao immigrated to Canada and later attended Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, where she earned a degree in biochemical disease research. Graduating during the peak of COVID, she opted to stay home and write a book instead of seeking employment in her field. In addition to her writing, Zhao creates YouTube videos focused on Chinese history and culture.
