Torey Hayden is an American author known for her fiction and non-fiction works focused on child psychology. She is a child psychologist, special education teacher, and university lecturer. Her non-fiction writings draw from her real-life experiences with traumatized children, addressing issues such as autism, Tourette syndrome, sexual abuse, fetal alcohol syndrome, and her area of expertise, selective mutism (previously called elective mutism). Torey is divorced and has one daughter, Sheena. She published her first book, the non-fiction work One Child, in 1980, and made her fiction debut in 1984 with the novel The Sunflower Forest.
