Order of Shelby Foote Books

Shelby Foote (1916-2005) was an American novelist and military historian, renowned for his three-volume work, The Civil War: A Narrative. With deep ties to the Mississippi Delta, Foote's life and writing reflected the dramatic transition from the Old South's agrarian planter system to the Civil Rights era of the New South. For much of his career, he remained relatively obscure until his feature in the PBS documentary “The Civil War” in 1990, which introduced many Americans to a conflict he viewed as pivotal to the nation's identity. Foote died in 2005 at the age of 88 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, next to the family plot of General Forrest. He published his first novel, Tournament, in 1949.
