Peter Heller

Peter Heller is an American author and a long-time contributor to NPR. He also serves as a contributing editor for Outside Magazine and Men’s Journal. Heller writes adventure columns that have earned him several awards, and he has authored numerous works of literary nonfiction. Originally from New York, he moved to Vermont for high school and later attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, where he developed a passion for the outdoors and became an expedition kayaker, documenting his challenging descents. His love for writing led him to the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where he received an MFA in fiction and poetry. Heller was awarded a Michener fellowship for his epic poem “The Psalms of Malvine.” He later participated in one of the most ambitious whitewater expeditions, which he chronicled in his book, Hell or High Water: Surviving Tibet’s Tsangpo River.
