Pat Barker is an English writer known for her historical and contemporary fiction. Her works often explore themes of memory, trauma, survival, and recovery. Her writing style is characterized as direct, blunt, and straightforward. Raised in a working-class family in Thornaby-on-Tees, Yorkshire, Pat never met her father, and her mother, facing societal stigma against illegitimate children, introduced her as a younger sister instead of a daughter. She was primarily brought up by her grandmother and step-grandfather. Pat attended King James Grammar School and Grangefield Grammar School before studying international history at the London School of Economics. She currently resides in Durham, England.
