Throughout his career, Nickolas has held various jobs, including meatpacker, Burger King maintenance worker, liquor store clerk, coffee roaster, office manager, author escort, innkeeper, and other miscellaneous positions. He is married, has two children, and resides on 16 acres in rural Wisconsin. Nickolas Butler made his novel debut in 2014 with "Shotgun Lovesongs."
