Mary Monroe is an American writer known for her African-American fiction novels. She is the creator of the God Don’t Like Ugly series and the Mama Ruby series. Raised as the daughter of sharecroppers in Alabama, she was the only one in her family to complete high school. Rather than pursuing college or formal writing education, she honed her writing skills by crafting short stories since the age of four. Her favorite authors include Ernest Gaines, Stephen King, Alice Walker, and James Patterson. Mary resides in Oakland, California. She published her first novel, The Upper Room, in 1985. However, it took another 15 years and numerous rejection letters before she secured a contract for her next book, God Don’t Like Ugly, which was released in 2000.
