She is the creator of the interconnected Soulmates Dissipate and Honey Diaries series, which address social and sexual themes while promoting female empowerment. Born in Aurora, Illinois, she was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, and graduated from Berkeley Community College in California. Her son, Jesse Byrd, Jr., is also a novelist. Mary currently resides in Oakland, California.
