He initially started reviewing books to receive complimentary copies, which helped him save money. This led him to begin writing, ultimately creating the character Tom Thorne. Additionally, Billingham collaborates with Peter Cocks under the name Will Peterson. He became a published fiction author in 2001 with the release of Sleepyhead.
