Madeleine L’Engle (1918-2007) was an American writer known for her contributions to young adult fiction, Christian fiction, science fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. She authored the Time Quintet and the Austin Family series. L’Engle began her writing journey at the age of eight, maintaining a journal. Due to her shyness and clumsiness as a child, her teachers deemed her unintelligent, which led her to immerse herself in reading and writing. After facing financial struggles in her career, she contemplated retiring from writing on her 40th birthday, but soon conceived the idea for her most famous work, A Wrinkle in Time, which won the Newbery Award. Her debut novel, The Small Rain, was published in 1945, and she continued to write until her passing in 2007, with her last original work being the non-fiction book The Joys of Love.
