Lucia Berlin

Lucia Berlin (1936-2004) was a short story writer who achieved publication later in life, thanks in part to encouragement from poet Ed Dorn. Although she never became a bestseller, she had a significant impact on the literary community and is often compared to Raymond Carver and Richard Yates. One of her notable accomplishments is the remarkable one-page story "My Jockey," which encapsulated a world, a moment, and a sweeping movement in just five brief paragraphs, earning the Jack London Short Prize in 1985. Berlin also received an American Book Award in 1991 for "Homesick" and was granted a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
