Julie C. Dao is a Vietnamese-American author renowned for her Rise of the Empress series, which started with Forest of a Thousand Lanterns and was followed by Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix. Initially, Dao pursued a medical degree in college but soon discovered that she was uncomfortable with blood and needles. She then transitioned to working in science news and research during the day while writing stories about heroines striving for their dreams at night. This phase of her life inspired her to create Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, the inaugural book in the Rise of the Empress series.
