Josephine Tey was the pseudonym of Scottish writer Elizabeth Mackintosh (1896-1952), known for her mystery novels. She also authored historical fiction under the name Gordon Daviot. The pen name “Josephine Tey” was derived from her mother’s first name (Josephine) and her grandmother’s maiden name (Tey). Her most famous work, The Daughter of Time, was recognized by the Crime Writers’ Association in 1990 as the greatest mystery novel of all time. Tey's writing career began in 1929 with the novels Kif and The Man in the Queue (both published as Gordon Daviot). She made her first appearance as Josephine Tey in 1931 with The Expensive Halo.
