Johan Theroin is a Swedish author known for his contributions to Scandinavian crime fiction. Throughout his life, he has frequently visited Öland, where he has appreciated its rich tales and folklore. His mother's family originates from the island, with a history of working as sailors, fishermen, and farmers. His debut novel, Echoes from the Dead, received the Best First Mystery Novel award in 2007 from the Swedish Academy of Crime Writers. His second book, The Darkest Room, won the Best Swedish Crime Novel award in 2008. Johan resides in Gothenburg, Sweden. He made his debut as a novelist in Swedish with Skumtimmen, which was translated and published in English the following year as Echoes from the Dead.
