Jeannette Walls is an American author known for both fiction and non-fiction, as well as a journalist who previously worked as a gossip columnist for MSNBC.com. She is a New York Times bestselling author. During her childhood, her family frequently relocated, living in places such as Phoenix, San Francisco, Nevada, and West Virginia, and at times experiencing homelessness. Eventually, they settled in West Virginia, where they had three rooms but lacked plumbing and heat, though they did have snakes and rats. Jeannette later moved to New York City, completed high school, and worked at a Wall Street law firm. She graduated with honors from Barnard College in 1984. Jeannette currently resides on a 205-acre farm in Virginia with her husband, John J. Taylor, and her mother. She made her authorial debut in 2000 with the non-fiction book Dish, followed by her first novel, the true-life story Half Broke Horses, in 2009.
