James Clavell

James Clavell (1924-1994) was a British author known for his historical fiction, as well as a screenwriter and director. A veteran of World War II, he was a Japanese POW, experiences that influenced his writing, particularly in his notable work, King Rat. He also wrote screenplays for several films, including The Fly and The Great Escape. Clavell admired Ayn Rand and sent her a copy of Noble House with a note that read, “This is for Ayn Rand – one of the real, true talents on this earth for which many, many thanks.” He published his first novel, King Rat, in 1962.
