Iceberg Slim was the pen name of Robert Beck (1918-1992), an author of crime fiction and non-fiction. Slim, a former pimp, transformed his real-life experiences into a writing career. His name reflects both his composed nature in high-pressure situations and his physique. His success was partly due to his skill in hiding his emotions. After serving time in jail, he retired from pimping, feeling too old for the lifestyle and facing tougher competition. His common-law wife, Betty Shue, encouraged him to write his life story as a novel and assisted him in the process. Slim reportedly made two promises while writing his memoirs: to avoid glamorizing his past and to refrain from informing on others.
