Order of Helen MacInnes Books

Helen MacInnes (1907-1985) was a Scottish-American novelist renowned for her spy fiction, often hailed as the “Queen of Spy Writers” by the Sunday Express. Born in Glasgow, she graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1928 with degrees in French and German. After obtaining her M.A., she attended University College, London, where she earned her librarianship diploma in 1931. It was during her time as a librarian that she met her husband, Gilbert Hughet. The couple translated German literature to fund their summer travels across Europe, which later inspired the settings for MacInnes' spy thrillers. She made her literary debut in 1941 with the novel Above Suspicion, which was adapted into a film in 1943 featuring Joan Crawford, Fred MacMurray, and Basil Rathbone. Other MacInnes novels that were turned into films include Assignment in Brittany, The Venetian Affair, and The Salzburg Connection.
