Gunnar Staalesen is a Norwegian writer known for his Scandinavian crime fiction novels, particularly the Varg Veum series. He was born and raised in Bergen, Norway, located on the country's west coast. Staalesen obtained his Cand.philol degree from the University of Bergen and worked at the city's main theatre. He became a published author in 1969 with his book Uskyldstider. His first work published in English was At Night All Wolves Are Grey in 1986, introducing the Varg Veum character to English-speaking readers; the novel had been released in Norwegian three years earlier.
