Frances Crane

Frances Crane (1890-1981) was an American mystery novelist known for her Pat & Jean Abbott series. She graduated from the University of Illinois and pursued graduate studies at the University of Chicago. A vocal liberal, she spent time in Nazi Germany, where she mocked Hitler’s speeches and attempted to convince restaurant staff that she was Jewish, leading to her expulsion from the country. Upon returning home as a divorcée and in need of financial support, she began writing detective fiction. Crane made her novel debut in 1941 with The Turquoise Shop, launching her Pat & Jean Abbott series, which includes 26 titles along with four standalone novels.
