Elizabeth Smart (1913-1986) was a Canadian novelist and poet. She was raised in Ottawa, Ontario, where her family owned a summer home adjacent to future Prime Minister Mackenzie King at Kingsmere Lake. Elizabeth had a long-term relationship with poet George Barker, resulting in four children. She eventually settled in London, England, where she became the highest-paid copywriter in the country and served as the editor of Queen magazine. Elizabeth Smart made her literary debut with the novel By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept, which remains her most recognized work.
