His interest in the Romans began as a teenager when he took a summer job restoring a Roman marching camp. Afterward, he pursued a career in journalism, working for various local and national newspapers for thirty years. Eventually, he began writing, resulting in the novels Caligula and Claudius. Upon achieving success in fiction, he chose to write full-time. Doug resides in Bridge of Allan, Scotland, with his wife Allison and their three children.
