Order of Carlos Castaneda Books

Carlos Castaneda was an American author renowned for his book "The Teachings of Don Juan," which initiated a series of works detailing his training in shamanism. His twelve books recount his apprenticeship under a man he identified as don Juan Matus, a Yaqui "Man of Knowledge." Castaneda is regarded as a significant figure of the 1960s and a key contributor to the New Age movement of that era. Born in Peru in 1925, he moved to the United States in the early 1950s and became a naturalized citizen in 1957. He studied at UCLA, where he earned his PhD in anthropology. His first three books were written during his time as an anthropology student and served as his research log for his degree. He was featured in a Time Magazine cover article that described him as "an enigma wrapped in a mystery wrapped in a tortilla," a characterization that has not aged well for the publication.
