Boris Akunin is the pseudonym of Russian writer Grigory Shalvovich Chkhartishvili, known for his crime and historical fiction. He created the Erast Fandorin historical mystery series and the Sister Pelagia series. Born in Zestafoni, Georgia, he has resided in Moscow, Russia, since he was two. An expert on Japan, Akunin has been influenced by Kabuki theatre and has authored a 20-volume anthology of Japanese literature under his real name. He debuted as a novelist in 1998 with Azazel, which was translated into English as The Winter Queen and released in 2003. This novel launched the Erast Fandorin series and was nominated for the Dagger Award in Fiction by the British Crime Writers’ Association.
