Order of Alistair MacLean Books

Alistair MacLean (1922-1987) was a Scottish author known for his thrillers and adventure novels. His works, including The Guns of Navarone, Ice Station Zebra, and Where Eagles Dare, were all turned into successful films. MacLean's novels typically lack significant sexual or romantic elements, as he felt these would detract from the action. His first four novels, from H.M.S. Ulysses to The Last Frontier, were written in the third person, primarily set during World War II, and had an epic quality. The following four (or six, if including his Ian Stuart novels, from Night Without End to Ice Station Zebra) were first-person narratives set in modern times. The next six novels, from When Eight Bells Toll to Bear Island, varied in theme but were regarded as high-quality works. His final twelve novels, starting with The Way to Dusty Death, were seen as weaker, often criticized for being lazy and overly dependent on dialogue.
